What size are the orange plates?

The standard orange plate is 40 cm wide by 30 cm high with a 15 mm black border, reflectorized and weather-resistant (ADR 5.3.2.2.1). It has to stay in place and remain legible after 15 minutes engulfed in fire. If the vehicle has no large enough surface, the dimensions may be reduced to a minimum of 300 mm base, 120 mm height and a 10 mm black border.

What do the two numbers on a Kemler plate mean?

The upper number is the hazard identification number — the Kemler code — and the lower one is the UN number, separated by a horizontal black line 15 mm thick across the middle of the plate. The digits are 100 mm high with a 15 mm stroke, reduced to 65 mm high and a 10 mm stroke on reduced-size plates (ADR 5.3.2.2.2). Both numbers come from columns (20) and (1) of Table A.

When do I need numbered plates and when do plain orange plates do?

A transport unit carrying dangerous goods displays two plain rectangular orange plates, one at the front and one at the rear (ADR 5.3.2.1.1). Numbered plates are additional: tank-vehicles, battery-vehicles and transport units with tanks display plates bearing the hazard identification number and the UN number on the sides of each tank or compartment (ADR 5.3.2.1.2). Carrying packages does not by itself require numbered plates.
