FAQ — ADR 1.1.3.6
What is the ADR 1.1.3.6 exemption?
Section 1.1.3.6 of the ADR is a partial exemption for dangerous goods carried in limited quantities per transport unit. Within the limit, ADR placarding, orange plates and the driver's ADR training certificate are not required — but proper packaging, marking, labelling, a transport document, a fire extinguisher and general awareness training still apply.
How is the 1.1.3.6 "1000 points" total calculated?
Each dangerous good has a transport category. Multiply each quantity by its factor — Category 1 x50, Category 2 x3, Category 3 x1, Category 4 x0 — and add them up. If the total does not exceed 1000, the partial exemption may apply. Category 0 goods are never exempt.
What are the maximum quantities per transport category?
Maximum total per transport unit: Category 0 = none, Category 1 = 20, Category 2 = 333, Category 3 = 1000, Category 4 = unlimited (kg or litres, depending on the substance).
Is my shipment fully exempt from ADR under 1.1.3.6?
No — it is a partial exemption. The goods remain dangerous goods and you must still package, mark and label them correctly, carry a transport document and a fire extinguisher, and follow the remaining rules. When in doubt, confirm with a Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA).
